SANDAKAN: The
Sandakan Regatta/ Sandakan River Race/ Sabah Closed 2015 held here over the
weekend was a huge success.
“I wish to
congratulate Sandakan Yacht Club (SYC) for having staged a successful regatta
which saw the participation of a record 70 sailors from throughout Sabah,”
Sabah Sailing Association (SAILA) president Christopher Chin陳赐榮said in his remark
during the prize presentation ceremony at SYC on Sunday.
The participants are
from Sandakan Yacht Club (SYC), Kinabalu Yacht Club (KYC), Tawau Yacht Club
(TYC), Navy Yacht Club Kota Kinabalu (NYCKK)and Sabah Sailing Association
(SAILA), Chin 陳赐榮
added.
On the Borneo Interport
Regatta which SYC Commodore Daniel Liaw had in his speech indicated SYC’s plan
to revive the event, Chin陳赐榮 said it was a prestigious sailing competition
previously held annually and
participated by sailors from Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei.
The previous edition
of the Borneo Interport Regatta was participated by Kinabalu Yacht Club, Kuala Belait Boat Club,
Brunei, Royal Brunei Yacht Club, Piasau Boat Club Miri Sarawak, Sandakan Yacht Club,
Sarawak Sailing
Association, Sabah Sailing Association, Navy Yacht Club KK, Sepanggar and Tawau
Yacht Club Tawau.

his address said this year’s regatta for the first time was being held in
conjunction with the annual Sandakan Festival and also included the Sandakan
River Race sponsored by SYC Honorary Vice Commodore James Pua.
Daniel廖伟雄thanked Sabah Youth
and Sports Minister Datuk Haji Tawfiq Datuk Haji Abu Bakar Titingan, Sandakan
Municipal Council president Datuk James Wong, SAILA, the Royal Malaysian
Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Royal Malaysian Navy, all
participants and generous sponsors for helping to make the regatta a success.
According to Daniel廖伟雄, SYC hoped to revive
the prestigious Borneo Interport Regatta in 2016 with the support of SAILA and
all relevant agencies.
Meanwhile, guest of
honour First Admiral Dato Ahmad Abdullah, the Commander of the Sandakan Navy
Base , commended Sandakan Yacht Club for its efforts in promoting sailing in
Sandakan.
In fact this event
could be considered as part of the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) as it
involved many government agencies and department, Ahmad pointed out.
“Sailing is a sport
that is popular locally and internationally and sailors produced by Sandakan
Yacht Club have brought glory to Sabah as well as the country,” Ahmad said.
It is also one that
promotes a healthy lifestyle as well as hones a sailor’s skills, discipline,
communication and team spirit, he added.
“Sailing is a sport
that is well suited for youths as it instills in them all the good qualities
required of a leader. It is also one that a family can participate in and this
is good for family bonding,” Ahmad said.
