BATU SAPI:- The Welfare Department distributed food on Wednesday to Kampung Pisang fire victims who are temporary putting up at the village surau following the blaze that destroyed five houses on Mar 29.
Head Liaison Officer of Batu Sapi MP Office Kong Nyuk Thou visited the fire scene on Wednesday morning on the instruction of Batu Sapi Member of Parliament Datuk Linda Tsen to meet with the fire victims and also hold discussions with Welfare and Civil Defence officers.
"The Welfare Department and Civil Defence are registering the fire victims and meals will be handed out to them today," Kong said on Wednesday.
According to Kong, 34 fire victims are given shelter at the village surau while one family comprising five persons have moved to temporary stay with relatives.
Datuk Linda Tsen is currently attending Parliament sitting in Kuala Lumpur and she will return to Sandakan this Saturday where she will provide assistance to the victims, Kong said.
The fire at Kampung Pisang, Batu Sapi on Tuesday afternoon destroyed five houses and partially damaged another a sixth structure, rendering 39 people from five families homeless.
The Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station was informed of the incident at 4.36pm and responding firefighters contained the blaze at 5.14 pm and prevented it from engulfing 30 other houses close by.
Officer-in-charge of the Sandakan Fire and Rescue station Mohd Razali Awang Ahmad said a man identified as Syahrul Neyzam, aged 31, sustained 20 percent burns to his back and was rushed to the Duchess of Kent Hospital by the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Emergency Medical Rescue Services for treatment.
The authorities are investigating to ascertain the cause of fire while losses has been estimated at RM 470,000, Razali said.
