SANDAKAN:  Sandakan Municipal Council president Datuk James Wong commended Sandakan Yacht Club (SYC) for its efforts in helping to promote sailing in Sandakan.

“Thumbs up to Sandakan Yacht Club for having successfully organised their second major regatta for this year after last month’s prestigious Borneo Interport Regatta,” James said in his address when officiating the closing ceremony of Sandakan River Race/ Sandakan Regatta/ Sabah Closed 2016 at Sandakan Yacht Club Sunday evening.

We at Sandakan Municipal Council would continue to support efforts to promote sailing and also to put Sandakan on the regional map as a destination for water sports, James who is the Special Guest of the event, added.

“Sailing as we all know is a sport that is popular locally and internationally. It is also one that promotes a healthy lifestyle and it hones a sailor’s skills, discipline, communication and team spirit,” he added.

As a sport which depends on the direction the wind is blowing, sailors are required to make swift decisions so that they stay on course and thus Sailing also boosts a person’s ability to make fast decisions.

“This event has not only produced notable sailors, but has also strengthened ties among sailors participating in the regatta as well as their family members who are here to support them,” James continued.

James said he was also happy to note that over the years SYC has succeeded in grooming young sailors that have gone on to represent the state and country in the sport of sailing.

“It is my hope that Sandakan Yacht Club will continue to organize this regatta as it promotes a healthy lifestyle and helps to instill good values in the younger generation,” James said.

Among those present at the closing ceremony were SYC commodore Richard Lim, Rear Commodore cum organising chairman James Leong, SAILA vice president Zainal Madi, SYC Honorary Vice Commodore James Pua, Sandakan district police chief ACP Zabidi Md Zain, Sandakan marine police commanding officer ASP Mazre Che Mahmod, Lieutenant Muhammad Firdaus Mohd Zulhari who represented NYCKK commodore, SYC past commodores and SYC general committees.
